Through an honest assessment, most believers in Christ, I believe, would come short of the mandate to “be holy, for I (God) am holy” (I Peter 1:16). This holiness which is God’s desire for us can only be fulfilled in us through a work of the Holy Spirit.
This work of holiness is accomplished by the believers willingness to cooperate with and be led by the Spirit. Truly, we are not capable of living the upright, moral, virtuous life of holiness on our own. Paul says in Gal. 5:17, “the flesh lusted against the Spirit…so that ye cannot do the things that ye would”.
If we are to know and do the things of God, which are holy, we must receive the Spirit of God. When we read I Corinthians 2:9f, we understand that as we aspire to live as spiritual beings, the Holy Spirit communicates all things of God to us freely, empowering us to live, as we earnestly desire it, a life of holiness.
