Righteousness A Believer’s Legal Standing

Believers in Christ Jesus should no longer confess they are “sinners saved by grace”, since we have been given the legal standing righteousness of God. Our righteousness is the ability to stand in God’s presence without a sense of sin, guilt, or inferiority.

Romans 4, informs us that righteousness is not reckoned to us on the ground of works; we cannot work enough for it, we simply accept it as a gift. We learn in Ephesians 2:8-9, “For by grace are you saved through faith, and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God. Not of works, lest any man should boast”. All righteousness, a believer’s legal standing is a gift from God.

Salvation, Redemption, Eternal Life, New Creation, Indwelling Holy Spirit, and the right to use the Name Of Jesus are all part of our privileges as sons and daughters of God. All of these rights accrue to believers based on grace through faith. Every believer in Christ Jesus has the same righteousness, the same legal standing, for it is all founded on grace.

  1. You are so right that, once we are saved by God’s grace, He no longer views us as sinners but as righteous. Because God is the Judge, our legal standing is righteousness. But, as long as we live in our flesh, we still struggle. As Paul said, we do what we don’t want to do and don’t do what we should do. Legally our spiritual standing is righteous but our earthly standing is a sinner saved by grace.

Thank you Sister Carter for your insightful comment. Certainly, we continue to struggle in our flesh as Paul intimates. However, no scripture indicates that our standing is mixed; we are not both righteous and sinners. I Pet. 4, exhorts, “he that hath suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin” Paul follows his consternation of Romans 7, with the affirmation of Romans 8, declaring, “there is now no condemnation…”. In Gal. he asserts, “…it is no longer I, but Christ that lives in me”. Consequently, we must conclude that our standing is one, spiritual righteousness in the earth. Nevertheless, we are cautious to consider, sojourning in the earth, we “work out our salvation with fear and trembling”. Thanks again for your witness for Christ.
